Muspelhell

I am overjoyed to announce Harrowings 03 Muspelhell. Specially because I made the cover for it!
Harrowings volume III is a "A Heavy Metal Dwarven Dungeon Adventure to Steal your Soul!". It is a RPG game design for use with Old School Essentials and compatible with Solo RPG gameplay. Please take a look at the KickStarter page to know more, just click here.

It was amazing to be able to join the team and see first hand what amazing things the writers and creators of the game came  up with. Not only I have made the cover for the book but also you'll find more of my illustrations inside!

Let's take a look at the cover:

        About the process:
The printed version of the book will be in A5 (I think. For official information check the KickStarter page). So I decided to paint it in A4 size. Before I got started on the cover itself I designed five of the dwarves in there. And I also created the design for the door after taking into consideration some information given by the team and in a delightful chat I had with Drew and Ben.

For the design of the dwarves I went with a shorter anatomy than what I usually do. I think this way is nicer! Their costumes are in a style that we may very well call Medieval-Metal. I think it was important to make them very metal (The game itself IS Metal), but I also wanted it to be reminiscent of the old school European dungeon exploring from RPGs of old. I am quite pleased with the design I gave 'em. The one with a black mustache in a gambeson armour to the right quickly became one of my favourites and a favourite with some members of the creative team.

Don't mess with him...

After creating a few sketches based on  the original thumbnail and with many elements designed I started drawing the page. The line work was made with my trusty Tachikawa pen on a heavy watercolor paper. Then after 5 days of painting the work was done!

The color scheme is yellow, red, orange, brown, blueish grey, and a hint of turquoise. But the actual pigments used were very varied. Not all blueish greys are payne's grey, some are gansai blackish blue, some are blue with neutral tint, etc. I matched a colour scheme, but didn't do a limited palette in terms of actual paint.
